Westminster City Council

£46,293 - £49,203

Full time

Westminster, London

TARCB028

Description

About Us:
Westminster is dynamic, multicultural and unique – much like our employees. Their expertise and commitment has enabled Westminster to thrive, despite reductions in public sector funding.  One of the ways we achieve this is through innovative partnerships with other organisations, including an agreement to provide legal services for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. They share our complex and demanding environment, which includes royal residences, centres of national government, major businesses and tourist sites, as well as meeting the needs of a huge incoming working population and thousands of residents.

The Role:
In this challenging senior role, you’ll take on a complex and high-profile caseload of both civil and criminal litigation cases across both boroughs and other partner bodies.  You’ll provide corporate and proprietary legal advice and conduct proceedings in diverse legal settings, from tribunals to the Supreme Court. You’ll also use your legal expertise to assist on the development of policy issues. Expect to work on developing and embedding systems and processes to help us achieve Lexcel accreditation.

About You:
An Admitted Solicitor and qualified Barrister, you’ll have substantial post-qualification experience within the legal profession, ideally including some exposure to local government issues. Experience in property and planning litigation, contract disputes, procurement challenges and insolvency law is helpful, as is experience in fraud prosecutions leading to recovery of proceeds of crime.

Highly developed communication skills, including the ability to convey complex legal issues clearly and succinctly to Council members and officers, will be key. You must also be able to work independently and under pressure.

The Council and its partners are committed to achieving diverse shortlists for all vacancies at Band 4 or above to support and increase the number of staff from underrepresented groups in our workforce. If you are from a black, Asian and minority ethnic background (BAME) we invite you to self-declare this to the hiring manager as part of our positive action commitments.

What We Offer:
If you’re as productive as you are ambitious and collaborative as you are enterprising, this is your chance to take real ownership of your work, right in the heart of iconic Westminster, a true ‘City for All’. This is a unique place where it all happens. And where it could all happen for you. As a progressive and innovative organisation, we welcome applications from candidates keen to work in an agile environment with flexible conditions.
