Scrutiny Officer - Hertford

East Herts District Council

£33,487 - £36,543 (inclusive of local weighting)

About the role 
An opportunity for a Scrutiny Officer has become available to work at Hertford as part of the Legal and Democratic Services team. This is a great opportunity for you to join us and develop your career as we are in an exciting time following recent Council elections which has created a Council for change and growth and has Members from the main political parties.

This motivated and highly professional team is looking for an individual committed to excellence in their work and with a passion for governance and democratic involvement. If successful, you will assist in scrutiny and across all aspects of democratic services which are conducted through face to face interactions with all Members and officers across the organisations.  You will be forward thinking and solution focused.  

Some of the key responsibilities include:

- providing support to the Council's scrutiny committee
- providing support to the Democratic Services Manager by organising, attending and servicing meetings (ie produce agendas, take notes, produce minutes and reports and correspondence following meetings) and other associated tasks. 
- to provide advice and guidance as necessary at meetings to Chairs of the Committees and Councillors on the procedure for the meeting, observance of the Council and Executive Procedure Rules (standing orders) and relevant provisions of the Constitution. 
- to provide an efficient, effective and comprehensive support service to the Members of the Council, in accordance with agreed parameters.

About you
This role will suit a detailed, focused, enthusiastic team player who enjoys a political environment.
The ideal candidate will have:

- experience of co-ordinating and understanding the role of scrutiny committees
- an excellent working knowledge of the relevant legislation and regulations relating democratic processes
- the ability to deal with challenging situations using tact and diplomacy
- experience within a busy administration role within an office environment
- competency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
- excellent communication skills
- experience of Mod.Gov system
